Area II · Languages for Peace

Learning to encounter one another

Language learning as a way to build relationships, honour cultural identities and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

African languages at the centre

Every language carries a world of meaning

The programme begins with a manageable selection of languages, developed with competent speakers and educators, and will expand as partnerships and resources grow.

Language learning is connected to the people who speak each language and the worlds of meaning it carries. Contributors are credited, and dialect differences and cultural context are respected.

Guiding question

How can learning one another’s languages help us recognise one another’s humanity?

Planned offerings
  • Introductory lessons with pronunciation recordings and everyday expressions
  • Vocabulary for welcome, friendship, cooperation, dialogue and reconciliation
  • Proverbs, stories, songs and cultural notes explained in context
  • Language exchanges and conversations with speakers
  • Resources for schools, pastoral workers, travellers and community organisations
